PHRENELITH set release date for new NUCLEAR WINTER album - reveal cover, tracklisting

Today, Nuclear Winter Records announces December 10th as the international release date for Phrenelith's highly anticipated second album, Chimaera, on CD and cassette tape formats. The vinyl LP version will follow next year.

Since their formation in the dying days of the year 2013, Phrenelith have established themselves as a menacing force on the contemporary death metal scene. Dwelling in the dark pits of Copenhagen, the band honed their deadly craft, releasing a wealth of well-received demos, splits, and EPs. These primitive outbursts led to the release of their debut album, Desolate Endscape, in 2017, which has earned them much renown and praise, further solidifying their place in underground death metal. Furthermore, that debut album took them to far-flung corners of the world, allowing them to tour extensively in Europe and North America, and make festival appearances at Maryland DeathFest and Asakusa DeathFest in Japan among others.

Several years having passed since the conception of their monumental debut album, Phrenelith have been slowly conjuring up new material, which has culminated in the creation and recording of a new full-length that will soon be unleashed upon the world. Titled Chimaera, Phrenelith’s second album comprises seven songs of bludgeoning death metal, with lyrics heavily inspired by the darker terms of Greek mythology and shows a horrid-yet-familiar visage. While delving into new and uncharted musical territory, incorporating new refining elements, Phrenelith’s attack is accompanied by the downtuned darkness and death-rattling emissions that the band is known for. Truly, it is not hyperbole to suggest that Chimaera eclipses the expansive horror of Desolate Endscape.

Fully befitting this accomplishment, Chimaera is completed with cover artwork by the late/great Timo Ketola, while mixing & mastering were handled by Greg Wilkinson, who’s worked with Autopsy, Vastum, Necrot, Ossuarium, Undergang, and Fetid among many others (recording took place in Denmark’s Studio Ballade). As another cursed year draws to a close, Phrenelith looms ominously over all!

First track to be revealed shortly. Aforementioned cover artwork and tracklisting are as follows:

SLOWSHINE: Album Premiere on The Obelisk

"Living Light" - Bandcamp
0025779749_100

A sonic journey through clouds of thunder, SLOWSHINE combines the wall-of-sound dynamics of Torche with the vintage swagger of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. With the warmth of 70s UK psychedelia and the driving riffs of stoner rock, "Living Light" is an exploration of storytelling through rhythm and texture.

FFO: Torche, Crippled Black Phoenix, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, King Gizzard
& the Lizard Wizard

Psych doom power couple Jan and Sabine Oberg (Earth Ship, Grin) have teamed up with drummer André Klein (Earth Ship, The Smokin’ 44s) to form a new heavy noise rock project called SLOWSHINE. Living Light is the band’s first musical outing, consisting of eight sweeping tracks that take cues from post-punk, stoner rock, sludge, and shoegaze.
As Jan Oberg (guitars & vocals) explains, “'Living Light' is about wandering around as the last person or soul on a destroyed planet where nature has finally taken everything back.” The singing, buried under vast layers of distortion and reverb, conveys stories from a post-apocalyptic world that slowly engrave themselves into the listener’s brain. However, "Living Light" shouldn’t be considered as a warning about impending doom, but rather as an exploration of storytelling through rhythm and texture. Drenched in filters and fuzz, "Living
Light" combines the warmth and haze of seventies UK psychedelia with the expansive driving riffs of stoner rock.
Songs like “Trails” or “Heights” with their swaggering rhythms really let the brain take the backseat in favor of a more intuitive listening experience. However, before unfastening the top two buttons of their shirt, one should know that SLOWSHINE references the melodic wall-of-sound dynamics of Torche as much as the vintage big ball swagger of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. On their debut, SLOWSHINE excel through a wide range of dynamics, from the contemplative “A Quiet Place” to the explosive “Mother Moon”.
Being a product of pandemic times, the "Living Light" was recorded in four live sessions at Jan Oberg’s own Hidden Planet Studio; a tactic that enhances the album’s no-nonsense attitude and sincerity. Nevertheless, the tracks on "Living Light" contain a sonic depth that would suggest a more tedious recording process. From the low rumbling bass of Sabine Oberg to the shimmering 12-string guitars played by Jan Korbach (neànder, Casper) on “Trails”, SLOWSHINE presents a sonic depth befitting of the album’s epic narrative.
In combination with a stunning album cover by Benedikt Demmer (Druckwelle), "Living Light" provides the whole package – a sonic journey through clouds of thunder and vast open spaces.

Line-up:
Sabine Oberg – Bass
Jan Oberg – Guitars, Vocals
André Klein – Drums

Release Date: October 8th 2021 (Digital/Tape) | November/December 2021 (Vinyl)

Australia's doom heavyweights ATOLAH announce Comeback with Double EP Release!

Formed in 2007 in Perth, Western Australia, heavy stoner and doom act ATOLAH burst into the scene with their first acclaimed, instrumental EP “Relics” via PsycheDOOMelic Records in 2009, followed by extensive touring schedules all over Australia. After a longtime break, ATOLAH finally announced their return with the release of the Post, Cross and Yoke EP through Sleeping Church Records!

Back in 2010, the band relocated to The Netherlands and two new members were recruited, while they also added vocals for the first time in ATOLAH’s history. A year later, they entered the Void Studio, ran by Pieder Kloos (The Blood Ceremony, Peter Pan Speedrock ) and recorded Post, Cross and Yoke, which was never released properly due to the band going on hiatus shortly after. Fast forward to 2020 and Pierre, the band’s founding member and main songwriter, resuscitated ATOLAH in Melbourne, Australia. It is only in 2021 that new members were found: Clint (Hand of Doom Radio/Thaw) on guitar and Tim (Clagg). Finally, and almost 10 years after recording this beast of an EP, November 12, 2021 will see French underground powerhouse label Sleeping Church Records release Post, Cross and Yoke for the first time ever on CD and as a double EP bundle!

"Atolah is back, continuing with a new Melbourne line-up." Bassist / vocalist Pierre comments. "We are really excited to be back on the Aussie doom landscape after all these years and cannot wait to play shows with so many quality bands. This "half release, half re-release" will enable us to play our old songs, some of which have never been played live outside of Europe. The past is alive so to speak, however, we will soon be working on new material and hopefuly reach a new audience."

SPLIT HEAVEN – ELECTRIC SPELL (Review by Varg The Migthy)

Today’s review is of Mexican Heavy Metal band Split Heaven’s upcoming new album, out on October 29th.

Lingering in the dimmed border between Heavy Metal and Power Metal, the band adopt a style similar to the late 80s when this transition was most confuse. While some songs may sound as pure Power Metal in the likes of Helloween, there are also epic Iron Maiden-like melodies, kickass Judas Priest hints and overall notable Queensrÿche vibes around each track.

Completed with sweet solos and nice choruses, the album is a straightforward piece of NWOTHM that may appeal to any kind of Heavy Metal fan, and while no special sort of innovation is apparent, it’s a good old-school worship, tinted with Mexican touches. My personal highlights are “Sacred Fire” and “Hellion’s Night”.

I recommend this album to fans of Heavy Metal and Power Metal. My rating is of 8,5/10.
