TARMAT – OUT OF THE BLUE ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Brazilian AOR band Tarmat’s debut album, out on October 22nd.

While the release starts with a powerful hit imbued in synth greatness and nostalgic guitar melodies, the rest of the album takes a notable twist. Unlike the opening track, the other songs take a much lighter approach, similar to Scorpions or Frankie Goes To Hollywood ballads, even though the occasional Melodic Heavy Metal twist sometimes appears.

It’s best to check the album out expecting softer and chill-out Soft Rock songs than if you’re waiting for a hard turn. This band creates the sort of AOR to listen while having a martini in a utopic island instead of shifting into overdrive on the highway. The full-length as a whole is pretty decent and seems to fit pretty well in the categorisation of new AOR bands reviving the 80’s glorious days, though they have their own style developed that may probably help listeners of modern Pop Rock start to develop a better musical taste. My personal highlights are “Backbone Feeling” and “Rosetta Stone”.

I recommend this album to fans of AOR, Soft Rock and Melodic Heavy Metal. My rating is of 8/10.

DEIMLER – A THOUSAND SUNS ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Spanish Death Metal band Deimler’s upcoming debut album, out on October 19th.

Following the same style of their EP, the band deliver pure Death Metal with strong influences from Sweden the old-school way. Perhaps the album shows some additional maturity in their sound, with some occasional melodies adding a notable amount of darkness to the release, making the whole pretty epic from time to time.

Despite all that, the music is still unquestionably brutal at its core, forming a gruesome aura of demise around the listener while having some catchy riffs to surely enjoy if seen performed live. Fans of their EP will love the album, and people who haven’t checked it out should get ready for a merciless auditory carnage once this opus is released. My personal highlights are the title track and “The Sentinels”.

I recommend this album to fans of Death Metal. My rating is of 9,5/10.

SELFAWARE – ENTROPY ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Spanish Groove Metal band Selfaware’s debut album.

Wrapped in a Progressive Metal tint, this album is a much more easy-going listen than most albums of the genre, and while it is clearly coated in modernity, it includes some visible touches of Elegy/Tuonela-era Amorphis. Considering these elements, the album still includes some notable heaviness, although most of it is lightened especially with a soothing vocal performance with commercial capabilities.

Although the album may feel somewhat repetitive or long at times, it may serve as a good introduction for newcomers to heavier genres. The release also shows some hidden capabilities ready to mature in a future album. My personal highlights are “Chaos Theory” and “Damage Is Done”.

I recommend this album to fans of Groove Metal and Progressive Metal. My rating is of 7,5/10.
