Today’s
review is of International Gothic Death Doom Metal band Phobos Monolith’s debut
EP.
This
release really has an old-school feeling to it, reminding us of early Paradise
Lost and Crematory like no other modern band may (especially in the way the
solos and melodies are composed). You only have to check the title track and
you will instantly be delivered to the origins of the style, when the Doom side
wasn’t so prominent and Gothic Metal got combined with guttural vocals and
Greek scales beautifully played on guitar.
Perhaps
what kind of damages the music is the voice, for it is quite monotonous and
seems to be perhaps the only thing that needs improving. In my opinion, it
lacks some intonation and fluctuation between lower and higher tones, overall
the singer doesn’t get out of the comfort zone in this EP’s performance.
Nevertheless, it is a decent voice and it’s surely better than most bands,
although it doesn’t reach perfection.
I recommend this to
fans of Gothic Metal, Gothic Death Doom Metal and Death Doom Metal. My rating
is of 8,5/10.
