Today’s review is of Austrian Blackened Power Metal band Ancient Mastery’s two first concept albums.
These releases offer lore-dense music about a fantasy realm, whose story is narrated in these songs. The music implements lots of symphony and tends towards epic directions, though as this doesn’t include the aggressive side, it may remind more of Symphonic Metal than of Black Metal. Some rougher parts in the middle make it all more dynamic, but the main focus is fairly upbeat and may be compared to “Stronghold”-era Summoning or to The Lightbringer in their similar mix of Power and Black.
The first album is more straightforward and enjoyable if you come from Black Metal, while the second album is much lighter and offers a softer Power Metal approach, mixed with sometimes tiring interludes that strengthen the narrative with a musical cost.
I recommend these albums to fans of Power Metal, Symphonic Metal and Blackened Power Metal. My rating is of 8/10.
