Today’s review is of American Thrash Folk Metal band Pillaging Villagers’ debut album.
The album features an extremely odd mix of Crossover Thrash with merry Folk and instances of Black and Death. The album crosses an American Crossover soundscape to a Cradle Of Filth-like kind of almost Black Metal to end with a reprise in a Macabre-like dose of Thrash. While the amalgamation is dazzling, it is not entirely cohesive and the listener may feel as if the album was a split between very different bands.
While it has its share of extremity, it is definitely not furious, instead leaning towards a highly upbeat and almost comedic approach that may not satisfy everyone. Sometimes the synths and folk instruments don’t combine too well with the fast and straightforward riffs, but it’s a curious concept that could be perfected. My personal highlights are “The Count” and “Freedom Is Ours”.
I recommend this album to fans of American Thrash Metal and Folk Metal. My rating is of 7,5/10.
