KIMAERA – IMPERIVM
Today’s review is of Lebanese Symphonic Death Metal band Kimaera’s new album.
This release praises the great old days of the Roman Empire (with the release even being on the Ides of March) through brutal riffs in the likes of Nile bathed in many synth and symphonic elements to reminisce Septic Flesh. Complemented with soothing female vocals, there is also a pinch of darkness that makes it slightly blackened and much more epic than most albums of the genre.
Adding to the powerful and modern Death Metal sound, there are some oriental elements that make the songs feel more exotic for an occidental listener, though their incorporation tends to be more as subtle details and hints instead of throwing away the whole established sonority. This fact makes it interesting but not overwhelming, and it stays faithful to the Symphonic Death Metal idea while giving it a fresh spin. Fans of anything extreme, epic and melodic may enjoy this release. My personal highlights are “De Amare Et Bellum” and “Vi Divina”.
I recommend this album to fans of Symphonic Death Metal. My rating is of 8,5/10.
