Today’s review is of Greek Black Metal band Varathron’s classic album “The Lament Of Gods”, celebrating its upcoming CD reissue which will also include the “Sarmutius Pegorius” demo.
While the songs clearly have that easily identifiable personality of the band, they seem to be slightly different on this release, perhaps showcasing a higher musical maturity which nonetheless also carries the loss of some of the original raw potential. Despite the more refined composition of the release, it still combines the slight use of synth, the powerful and unique vocals and the characteristically Hellenic riffs to offer a very mystical aura.
The band’s evolution may be somewhat compared to Rotting Christ’s in the same period (considering as well their many similarities), though Varathron seems to have progressed more moderately, maintaining a higher fidelity to their original sound. Their mesmerizing tempo and progressions are still comparable to the ones on their previous works, but this release has the rougher edge refined to focus more on the atmospheres. My personal highlights are “Warrior’s Nightmare” and “Beyond The Grave”.
I recommend this album to fans of Hellenic Black Metal. My rating is of 9,5/10.
