KINGS OF OTHER WINGS – PHOENIX RISING (Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Australian Heavy Metal band Kings Of Other Wings’ debut album.

This band delivers some old-school Heavy Metal with some serious leaning towards the epic subgenres, relying also at times on some Progressive and almost psychedelic elements to finish weaving their sonority. As so, the band may remind at the same time of classic epic bands such as Cirith Ungol or even Candlemass in some slower bits as well as Australian psychedelic acts such as Pseudo Mind Hive, adding a distinct national identity that strengthens the album.

Fans of any sort of Heavy Metal may enjoy the release, for their music is fresh and has its own personality, but it also stays well within predetermined limits that make it accessible to many classic metalheads. The full-length doesn’t have any odd experimentation, but it also isn’t a generic offering, so it’s a nice bit of originality for the delight of your ears and neck. While some additional power may lack at the moment, the concept seems as if it may further be developed and perfected soon. My personal highlights are the title track and “The Old Man & His Guitar”.

I recommend this album to fans of Heavy Metal, especially Epic Heavy Metal. My rating is of 9/10.
