Today’s review is of Finnish Death Metal band Sentenced’s album “Amok”, given its recent rerelease.
Straying vastly from the original style of the Finnish scene, this release is but another example of a band turning to Melodic Death Metal. While at times it seems like a more refined transition here than on Amorphis or Demigod albums, at other times the clash of their original style with a more commercially friendly approach seems to produce a mediocre result.
The release notably has many influences of Gothic Metal, especially towards the last songs, and though these inspirations may sometimes help maintain a slightly eerie atmosphere, some songs sound as a bad version of Moonspell. Despite all this, there are certain tracks that have some appeal to them and that portray pretty well the decadent zeitgeist of Extreme Metal purity’s death throes, although fans of pure Death Metal will surely dislike this one. My personal highlights are “The War Ain’t Over!” and “Funeral Spring”.
I recommend this album to fans of Melodic Death Metal and Gothic Metal. My rating is of 7/10.
