Today’s review is of Ukrainian Oriental Metal band Sanatana’s double album “Brahmavidya”.
Somewhat like Ignea, this band takes a fresh, modern and innovative leap from Extreme Metal into rarely trodden fusion territories to deliver an interesting concept that may appeal to fans of Folk Metal or anything experimental, atmospheric and oddly progressive. Wreathed in mystery, their songs add Hindu folk music to a furious yet flamboyant modern Metal base especially in “Brahma”, while “Vidya” takes an almost instrumental approach that strays further from metal but that creates even more interesting ambiences.
Curiously, their concept flows naturally and may be enjoyed by fans of earlier boundary-breaking Extreme Metal acts such as Arcturus, for their modern elements are present but not forcibly squashed into the mix for extra commercial friendliness. While it may seem difficult to listen, it is certainly worth it if you enjoy Avant-Garde layers of elegance and subtle complexity in your Metal. My personal highlights are “Mukti” and “Yuga Dharma”.
I recommend this album to fans of Folk Metal, Oriental Metal, Avant-Garde Metal and anything innovative and atmospheric. My rating is of 9/10.
