PLASTIQUE NOIR – ISKUROS (Review by Varg The Mighty)

Today’s review is of Brazilian Post-Punk band Plastique Noir’s new album.

This release is a real throwback that captures pretty well the essence of an emerging genre from the early 80s. Catching the same bleak death throes of the falsely dying Punk from that time and transporting them through time to a sort of new conception of Gothic Rock, the band seems to have the same feeling as the early acts of the genre, though due to influences of posterior bands their sound seems more refined and not as raw.

While some touches of Siouxsie And The Banshees may be appreciated, the main influence- sometimes in overwhelming excess- seems to be Joy Division’s magnum opus. The unique and hard to describe atmosphere of that album is here reflected, though in the process losing some of its magnificence and morbidity, into a slightly more danceable sort of Gothic Rock as heard by other bands. Overall, this full-length seems to be one of the very few to capture the right feeling when attempting to reproduce early Gothic Rock and Post-Punk. My personal highlights are “Kinetosis” and “Kafe”.

I recommend this album to fans of Post-Punk and Gothic Rock. My rating is of 9/10.
