Today’s review is of Canadian Black Metal band Nocturnal Prayer’s upcoming new album, out on March 1st.
This album is a good dose of wretched and raw Black Metal at its finest. Full of distortion, cold riffs and foul vocals (which are well placed and feel like the best element of the full-length), this release may appeal to fans of Raw Black Metal.
Nonetheless, some tracks feel mediocre and seem to lack feeling and freshness, though these songs are compensated with others that truly envelop in a better crafted aura of darkness. Perhaps this would’ve passed more unnoticed with another tracklist, but the songs are ordered in a way that offers a big piece of dull melodies that gradually end up becoming something more whole towards the end of the album, when the last songs transmit much more and seem more prone to captivate the listener. With this said, there aren’t any tracks that sound bad, just that the qualitative difference is high, but a whole play is still recommended to enjoy the whole voyage through these sonic frostbitten depths. My personal highlights are “Moonlit Paths To The Crystalline Throne” and “Slow Curse Pt. II (Rife With Possession)”.
I recommend this album to fans of Black Metal, especially Raw Black Metal. My rating is of 8/10.
