Recap

Mighty Music 2021 releases recap

2021 was supposedly the come-back year. But every hope we had that the beginning of the year would magically wipe away all the problems brought by the pandemic were shattered to pieces by the ruthless first months of 2021. Still, at Mighty Music, we took the chance to sit, rethink our release strategy and realize less is more. That's why we had a significant reduction in our released titles, but a mere look into the list below will immediately show that the quality went skyrocketing. We hope you enjoyed one more year of Mighty Music and, in case you did, please make sure you include some of these fantastic records in your best-of lists that will soon be on the order of the day.

December 2021

Mighty Music

Another year has come to an end and, as you can see by the amazing list of 2021 releases that closes the present newsletter, Mighty Music was far from crippled by a tough, tough year. We fought back, we had an amazingly qualitative year plus we helped restore some normality, via our bands' concerts, in the live scene in Denmark and a little bit all over the world, when the pandemic gave a little break.

In 2022 we'll keep going strong - as you can see by the three releases already announced in this newsletter - keeping the quality over quantity politics. There are far too many releases being put out there on a weekly basis, very little time to check them all, and some missing the quality. We have very little chance of changing that on a global scale but, if it's up to us, you'll get enough time and plenty to enjoy in your 2022 released records. Bring them on!

Withering Surface "Unique" reissue

Back in 1994 in a town called Naestved in the South of Sealand, Denmark, Michael H. Andersen used most of his spare time working on his fanzine Emanzipation. 19 year old still living with his parents, MHA was about to get an awakening. He had recently fell in love with the first demo tape from Eucharist and an advance tape for the upcoming In Flames album and loved the direction At The Gates and Amorphis was heading. Almost no one in the circle of musicians in the South of Sealand had any idea what those bands were all about. This is before internet and in the outskirts of Denmark, so all information about new bands was through tape trading or the records the local record store managed to get and occasionally the trip to record stores in capital city Copenhagen.

The Danish scene back then mainly had focus on brutal death metal and hardcore/thrash. MHA wanted to start up what he thought would be the first Danish melo-death band. After having meet two equally minded metal fans at a local metal show, Jimmy Christensen and Kaspar Boye-Larsen, and approaching Allan Tvedebrink from the local thrash band Mortifere and adding Jakob Gundel from MHAs other band Crawcell, the first melo-death band in Denmark was born. A few rehearsals later and a search for the perfect band name, Withering Surface was a reality in late 1994. Just six months later the four young guys, aging from 14 to 21, entered the Take-One studio for 3 days where four songs were recorded, mixed and mastered with producer Casper Munko, who had previously worked with Dominus among others. The result was “Unique”. A recording that was baptized a “promo tape” and sold close to 2000 copies worldwide through the underground scene with trades, and physical money bills sent to MHA. The four songs also ended up being licensed for cassette release South America.

“Unique” now sees the light of day again on vinyl release. Henrik West at Medley Studio was handed over three versions of the original “Unique” cassettes to do a digital re-master of for vinyl release. Not an easy job, but he pulled it through. What you hear in the year 2021, is a raw recording from a young band with various musical directions and inspirations trying to find their own music style. Does it stand the test of time? Yes!

“Unique” is now released on vinyl in 300 copies in 3 different vinyl colours (100 copies of each vinyl color only).

Lucer: new album postponed to August

Foto by Klaus Rudbæk

The previously announced LUCER third album “The New World”, firstly predicted for January 28th, is now postponed to August! Constraints in production dictated this postponement.

On “The New World”, the pure rock sound that many know from Lucer’s debut album is accompanied by both electrobeats and sync effects - and that is exactly the common thread throughout the album. It’s the sound of rock a la 2022, and a band that has really found their DNA.

“The New World" will be released by Mighty Music in CD, LP (grey vinyl, limited to 300 units) and digital formats on August 19th, 2022. Pre-orders up now at this link.

A new single, titled "Death Wish", will be released in January.

Vanir "Sagas"

From the Sagas of old, to the halls of Valhalla, from Danish and Germanic battlefields with their bloody battles and fierce warriors, Danish warriors VANIR are back and have put together, without compromise, a new epic album, with a fascination with our common origins, and the blood spilled throughout history. Few bands have more authority to do so: Vanir is one of Denmark’s most well-known and prominent Viking melodic death metal bands. The group has, since it’s inception, released five full-length albums very well received by the media and the avid supporters of the genre. But one can say, without much hesitation, their sixth effort “Sagas” is their best yet.

“Sagas” will be re-released in CD, LP (two different colours, each limited to 300 units) and digital formats via Mighty Music on March 11th, 2022. Pre-orders available here.

A first digital single from the album, "Dødsfærd", will be released on January 7th.

Svartstor "Kumbl"

Although it is now quite a while since SVARTSOT have released new material, the band is still very much alive and kicking. In the interim since 2015’s “Vældet”, the beer-soaked folk metallers have been active on the live scene in Denmark and abroad, including appearances at various major festivals as well as at the prestigious 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise in 2019. After a change of bassist and the decision to shelve an album’s worth of material in 2017/18, the idea of releasing a collection of traditional folk songs that have inspired the band, reworked in Svartsot’s characteristic style, was spawned.

The original idea was to release this fifth album, entitled “Kumbl” (an old Danish word meaning ‘monument’ or ‘memorial’), in 2020 to coincide with Svartsot’s 15th anniversary. However, due to various practicalities, the album was first recorded — by none other than the band’s drummer and up-and-coming producer, Frederik Uglebjerg (www.uglebjerg.com) — during the pandemic. The release also marks the band’s first collaboration with Danish metal label, Mighty Music.

“Kumbl” will be released in CD, LP (two different colours, each limited to 300 units) and digital formats via Mighty Music on February 25th, 2022. Pre-orders available here.
