KTULU REGRESO AL SOTANO (KTULU RETURN TO THE BASEMENT) Review By Javier Barba Vallejo

On November 1, I attended the second and last screening of the documentary "Ktulu Regreso Al Sotano" within the In-Edit film festival at the Aribau Multicines in Barcelona.
This documentary has been in the making for several years, since the idea was born by the director and director Nico Aguerre to tell the story of the Catalan band Ktulu, through Jorge Sanz Cabrera, an actor based in Madrid with whom he had worked in theater and a former guitarist. in Ktulu of the group that recorded the first albums, between 1989 and 1998, also producer and soul of this documentary.
A few years ago, Ktulu launched a crowdfunding campaign for the grant of this documentary and the box office proceeds from the memorable reunion concert for the band's 30 years on 1/21/17 in Sala Salamandra was also allocated to it, still thus it has been delayed due to the lack of budget until this 2021 when it was expected for the beginning of 2019, but it has done it in style in this 2021 edition of the In-Edit Festival, although a pity that it is out of competition because it is very worthy of an award and also its disappointing point so far and that is alien to the band and the documentary, is that no record or audiovisual company has yet bought it for commercialization showing the obtuse vision of Metal of these in this country, relegating it to a few DVD copies of the patrons who participated in its crowdfunding day.

I hope that with the dissemination of In-Edit someone will be interested in it and I wish Jorge, Nico and Ktulu all the luck in the world.
Ktulu Regreso Al Sótano, has two well differentiated parts, in the first the beginnings of the band, more documentary part and in the second the news of the five members and the moments before the reunion concert after 20 years and the sensations that surround them making it a more sentimental, nostalgic and endearing part.
Jorge Cabrera in front of the camera begins by presenting the history of Ktulu in the documentary as a synoptic from the neighborhood kids from L 'Hospitalet of the 80s excited by Thrash Metal to his first album Involucion followed by Orden Genetico, B.S.O. The Day Of The Beast that catapulted them to fame, Confrontation, El Latido Del Miedo, ktulu and 2078 "with small interventions by protagonists of each album such as the sound engineer Antonio Ribacova, the film director Alex De La Iglesia, the producers Charlie Chicago and Jan Borsing, the manager Oli Centeno etc ..., many and interesting archive recordings and interventions on TV, following the departure of the original musicians, the bassist Pablo and the guitar David Montes "Mons" to set up the band Freak XXI already due to musical / personal differences. Until the point where Jorge, the conductor and narrator of the documentary, leaves the band due to emotional exhaustion, from there he spreads a thread telling his personal story of his beginnings as an actor and settling in Madrid, to take the documentary to its second part in which the five musicians meet again 20 years later for the concert of "El Reencuentro", four of them having left music at a professional level. onal and only the incombustible singer Willy Espejo, leading the reins of Ktulu through the ages.

There they talk about their feelings, fears, memories, past and current illusions,
about the passage of time and the decisions taken, some correct and others not, chatting like a band of friends before the concert.
Making this second part of the documentary more personal and intimate, there are also rehearsal parts, talks about the current Ktulu manager, Ivan from Six Force Management and the culmination of his dream of being able to work with the band and brutal images of the concert " Reunion ".
It is a documentary that through a Rock band talks about the passage of time, the passage of life, the successes, the shits, the illusions, the frustrations ... emotions that anyone can have and that is why it is not directed only to fans of Ktulu and Metal, but it is interesting for all audiences outside of Rock, which was the goal that Jorge and Nico had set for themselves when they raised their filming and they have achieved it 100%.
For my part, I could not attend the first screening of the documentary that the entire original band was going to on Friday 10/29 for work reasons, so yesterday I went to the premiere, for me on a sad day personally, but I took my copy on vinyl of his first album Involución (1991) of which only 1000 copies were released and which is now a cult piece and I went to the Aribau cinemas, thinking that if there were only two screenings at the festival, all the original members would go both times ... and I was wrong, it was only one.

But still I was able to fulfill a dream to meet and chat with Jorge Sanz Cabrera, I arrived accompanied by Carmen Alcazar, his partner in the 90s and now great friends in life, of whom I attach for those who want to read a faithful and very good chronicle of the concert "El Reencuetro" that he published in his day for a digital magazine, also his brother Oscar and some friends.
When I asked for an autograph and released the album Involucion everyone freaked out, the ones that Jorge and I most !!!! Ha ha ha ... while they threw us photos and videos of the moment. Also Óscar Sanz Cabrera, his brother, he explained to me that he was the creator of the first Ktulu logo and the drawings of the insert that freaked out because I hadn't seen them for a lot of years so I told him "well, you must be here too" and I autograph the insert, which in the end I will frame next to my precious jewel, the Makinal bass that in its day I already signed the band and presides over a room at home.

Then when I entered the room I met my great friend, the Rock photographer Eduard Tuset, who also attended the screening alone and we saw it together, as a former student of the ESCAC (Escuela Superior de Cine y Audiovisuales de Catalunya). Edu was of great interest to me and at the end he told me that he was very satisfied.
At the end of the projection Jorge and Carmen saw the amazed face that I would wear and Jorge asked me if I had liked it.
Liked .... I loved it !!!! And so I let him know and we said goodbye very amicably, for me it was an endearing moment that I lived yesterday at the Aribau cinemas.
And now I only have to thank all the members and collaborators of Ktulu from any time, the music they have given us and they still give us special recognition to Willy for moving forward with the band.
PURE LIFE  !!!!
