Celebrating forty years in existence in 2021, old-school Boston grindcore/punk act PSYCHO will release Vulture Church – their first new full-length in over six years – through Selfmadegod Records this Friday. Advancing its street date, the album is now playing exclusively through a Grizzly Butts premiere.
As part of PSYCHO’s extensive discography dating back to the early 1980s, Vulture Church is PSYCHO’s fifth proper album, and second for Polish extreme label Selfmadegod. The record surges with the band’s rapid punk-infused grindcore mayhem, deploying eighteen tracks in under thirty-four minutes. Vulture Church was recorded at Lowell Street Studios Peabody, Massachusetts between February 2019 and February 2021, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Tom Hamilton, and completed with artwork by Corpz.
Diehards of old-school punk/grind acts Agathocles, S.O.B., Blood, Unseen Terror, Unholy Grave, Macabre, and Rot are called upon to worship at the altar of PHSYCHO’s Vulture Church.
With the album’s early stream, extreme music website Grizzly Butts writes, “By living in the moment with road-tested inside jokes, slices of everyday life, and engaging grind anthems, we are presented with a holistic representation of what PSYCHO have been all about from 1981 ’til today, marking Vulture Church as an impressive point of present day evolution — decades worth of their classic signature without a second of it too beholden to the past and yet all in celebration of their four decades in action thus far.”
PSYCHO’s Charlie Infection states, “Recorded during the pandemic of 2020-2021, this album features some of our best songs written to date! Some of my favorites are songs that I wrote. ‘Rock Opera’ is four songs linked together... it was supposed to be influenced by Anal Cunt but turned out a little different than it started. ‘Uncle Buff’ is about my real-life brother and how his wife has his balls in a jar on their mantle. ‘Stressed out’ is about my everyday life; I am always stressed out with too many things to do! Come and celebrate with the band and worship at the altar of the Vulture Church.”
Bassist Mike writes, “We're all excited to celebrate our 40th anniversary by releasing Vulture Church, our latest release on Selfmadegod! Eighteen trashy/thrashy tunes about our experiences touring the world and the people we meet out there and in our everyday lives. Written while on tour and recorded during the pandemic in our friend’s basement, we look forward to getting back on the road and playing and partying with you all real soon!”

PSYCHO has been shredding their way through the population since 1981. Formed as a punk band, the material simply grew faster and more extreme until it became the high-speed grind/thrash mutation their extensive discography of EPs, splits, and albums reflects, never following current trends nor trying to make it sound technical. The band's discography stretches back to 1982 with the release of their debut 12" 8 Song EP. One year later they released Son Of 8 Song EP, three years later the debut LP, Hosebags From Hell, and two years later the follow-up, You Love Us... You Hate Us... LP. Several EPs and splits with Anal Cunt, Agathocles, Meat Shits, Out Cold, Rot, Nasum, and more would drop throughout the '90s.
After a twelve-year stretch of silence, in 2008 PSYCHO released a double LP collection of early studio recordings as well as an eponymous CD/DVD. Selfmadegod released The Grind Years compilation CD in 2010, after which the band dropped two limited 7" EPs before setting up to record their first new LP in over two decades, Chainsaw Priest, released through Selfmadegod in 2014. Having deployed several vinyl-only titles over the years since, PSYCHO is now back with their fifth full-length album, Vulture Church.
