Heads For The Dead (International) - Slash 'n' Roll (Horror Death Metal)
After releasing two standout full length albums which were both refreshing and thrilling for this style of death metal, HEADS FOR THE DEAD whose lineup includes members of venerated and experienced bands such as WOMBBATH, GOREFEST, REVEL IN FLESH, HAIL OF BULLETS, have come up with an EP paying homage to the classic horror movies which have inspired their music in a big way. Having already established their own horror-tinged sound, it's fascinating to see the band employ a more crusty approach in giving these unforgettable horror movie tunes a brand new vision and output. There are reinterpretations of theme songs from movies such as Maniac, Halloween and The Thing, done entirely in the band's style with lyrics and death metal extremity and then there are two fitting cover songs from punk bands like MISFITS and RAMONES. All in all, this is an exciting and highly enjoyable release not just for the HEADS FOR THE DEAD fans, who have a new full length in the works, but also just about any fan of horror movies and heavy metal music.

Bizarre (Spain) - Invocation Codex (Lovecraftian Death Metal)
Exhumed from the crypts of the forgotten Finnish death metal gods, the music of BIZARRE is like an ancient dark force that has been summoned to be unleashed with magnified intensity upon the unsuspecting masses. Shrouded in layers of impenetrable darkness and reeking of otherworldly Lovecraftian horror and mystique, the music has an enchanting effect on the audience. Possessed-sounding vocals instil a sense of fear penetrating deep into the subconscious, as the guitars weave a dual-pronged attack comprising of body-maiming riffs and heart-stabbing melodies that sound like plaintive cries of souls trapped in bottomless limbo, all in all, orchestrating a diabolical onslaught invoking hell on earth. ‘Invocation Codex’ has been initiated to honour the true spirit of obscure death metal and wreak havoc in manners deemed necessary in such an era.

FETID ZOMBIE (US) - Transmutations (Death Metal)
Death metal band Fetid Zombie is the brainchild of the legendary artist Mark Riddick. An unstoppable force in the underground, Riddick has put out dozens of releases, mostly splits with bands from around the world, in addition to releasing six full length albums. It's been five years since the release of his last full length 'Epicedia' which came out on the same label, and now Riddick has once again teamed up with some extremely talented musicians to fulfill his vision of dark and atmospheric death metal that is rooted in the classic heavy metal sound. Contrary to the one-dimensional and predictable songwriting of most of the current bands, Fetid Zombie's songs are impeccably structured, with there being excellent contrasting passages, be it melodic flashes or slower, heavier hooks, flurry of leads or just some transcendental atmospheric part, all of which work beautifully against the backdrop of deep, guttural growls and stellar death metal riffing. This is a passionate and memorable death metal album that pushes the boundaries of the rigid genre in its own way, and it's one you'll keep coming back to because of its timeless value and flawless execution.

NECROGOD (Sweden) - In Extremis (Death Metal)
Necrogod is the perfect expression of atavistic death metal brutality spearheaded by none other than Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Revolting, Eye of Purgatory) who has teamed up with the revered The Master Butcher (Morbid Stench, Insepulto) to make this feat possible. It's a product of careful deliberation and years of experience, with Rogga Johansson laying down the heaviest music of possibly his entire career and The Master Butcher just taking things to another level with his barrage of unearthly roars. This is the culmination of death metal mastery, a groovy, pummelling record that imbibes the best elements of Swedish and American death metal scenes to create a truly fearsome record without parallel. What's surprising is that despite the face-blasting aggression and unbridled vocal delivery, the music is well-rounded with thought-out structures, tempo changes, build-ups, solos and even traces of sick melodies. Clearly a marked deviation from the usual Rogga Johansson fare that one is acquainted with, this is some next level old school brutality that will knock you flat and will have you crawling back for more.
