Today’s review is of Brazilian Progressive Metal band Heretic’s upcoming new album, out on August 31st.
Delivering some Progressive Metal with a notable heaviness in the likes of Gojira, the band continue with their exotic touches of oriental melody, though most of the time these influences have been carefully placed as to not seem out of place and mostly achieve a good effect.
Even though some parts are rather unpredictable, the veteran compositors have achieved a good sense of progression throughout the songs, and the Tool-like vocal performance helps solidify the mix. While some parts are quite catchy and hard-hitting, others may seem a bit tedious if the listener is not a diehard Progressive Metal fan. Thanks to a virtuous musicianship, the album includes powerful songs such as “Sudden Awakening”, “Whistleblower” or the odd cover of Black Sabbath’s “Anno Mundi”, but the release may become too long for the average listener’s taste.
I recommend this album to fans of Progressive Metal, Oriental-influenced Metal and Avant-Garde Metal. My rating is of 8/10.
