This being Shamael’s first album, we have to kneel before Raffaele Galasso (Gardenjia, Nightcrush), the sole musician behind this project, the Italian who has been able to write, perform, mix, and master this pantheon of blackness.
Hypnotised by this absolutely pantagruelic crescendo of atmospheric funeral doom we surrender to four songs that increasingly need to grow in scope, this album finally being crowned by ‘Moonsoon’, over 13 minutes long.
Laps of pure contemplation melt between gutturals, litanies and dejected tunes, ‘Way Of Woe’ demonstrates an uncommon mastery by the Transalpine, and, in short, you are astonished by the skill and authority that Raffaele Galasso has been able to deploy in this debut.
Shamael is like a long, feverish nightmare from which you cannot wake up, a fascinating one-man band that invokes a devastating funeral doom on a par with the best names of the style. Masterful.
